Description:
The Lviv which one sees today was, in a large part, constructed during the Austrian period of the city's history. The Austrian Empire acquired Lviv in 1772, and stayed until the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire after the First World War. During this period Lviv prospered, magnificent buildings for entertainment such as the Opera House were built, centers for learning established, like Lviv Polytechnic, and the city was electrified and trams were introduced.Although both the First and Second World Wars took a great toll on the population of Lviv, fortunately many of its buildings remained undamaged. Walking the streets of Lviv today one can see and feel the strong influence the Austrians had on this city. I hope you'll join me for a tour of the Austrian story of this city.

Tour program:
We’ll begin at the Opera House, from where a pregnant lady watches over Lviv. Yes, join me and I’ll tell you the fascinating story. . .
Having gazed at the magnificence of the Opera House, we’ll walk to the nearby House of Scientists which, during the Austrian times, was a casino before going to see the modern-day Ivan Franko National University, St George’s Cathedral and Lviv Polytechnic University, where we’ll learn more about religion, education and architecture in Galicia.
Turning to head back towards the city center, we’ll pass through the beautiful Franko Park, where we’ll see red squirrels hopping around! Passing pass back into the city we’ll look at the National Scientific Library, which houses a rare collections of books and, interestingly, used to be a monastery.
Finally we’ll see the grand Pototski Palace, which was originally build as a residence for the President-Minister of Austria, but is now the National Art Gallery. After the tour I highly recommend a visit to the gallery!
